I have watched all of Lost and am absolutely riveted by last night’s episode. I have never, ever really tried to understand Lost but for some reason, last night kicked my theorizing into high gear. I have a little theory that I’m just playing out. This post is more for me to write it all down and possibly get some of you people to shoot me down really fast or help it along. Don’t make fun…lost has me lost. I’ll admit it. But, I don’t know. I have heard rumblings of this theory although I haven’t read any.
Could it be that the MiB is actually God? A conversation last night between Richard and MiB had me thinking…
First when he goes to the ship the smoke monster comes and takes his wife and then the MiB says that he’s a friend and he will set him free if he says that he loves him and will do anything he asks.
Such wicked people are detestable to the Lord, but he offers his friendship to the godly. Proverbs 3:32 (NLT)
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatans 5:1
If you love me, you will obey what I command. John 14:5
He also still insists the “he” has her.
When they talk again right before he goes to meet Jac0b he tells him to kill the devil (Jac0b) and he says:
Richard: But how do I kill him, he is black smoke?
MiB: I am.
Richard goes on to talk about him taking his wife and MiB insists that “he” has her and he doesn’t need to worry about him. We are led to believe in the conversation that MiB is the smoke monster but what if MiB was saying you can do it because I AM. As in God who said “I AM”.
God said to Moses, “I am who I am . [a] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” Exodus 3:14
As for him being trapped could it be that the time on the island is similar to where God says Satan rules the earth now and He is waiting to make all things new (Revelation stuff).
Also, MiB believing that we have a sinful nature would again align with the Bible.
The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it?
Maybe Jac0b/Satan is trying to prove God wrong.
Also, Jac0b is always the one attributed to bringing people to the island and making plans. Isn’t Satan known to be the ultimate schemer?
This theory of course opens up a can of worms that I can’t quite get to the bottom of. This would mean that God has now taken the form of Locke. Is he gathering his Army to do battle against Satan at Armaggedon? The last episode title is “The End”. That could certainly support this theory.
But what does it mean that Jac0b died? Is he now inhabiting Sayid perhaps? Richard seems to realize that Jac0b was full of crap and MiB knows what he’s talking about. Further proof that MiB could be God because he says it’s never too late to change your mind. Brings to mind the thief on the cross with Christ and he calls Him Lord and Jesus tells him he will see him in paradise that day.
I don’t know. My brain is about to explode.
Does this have a chance at all??

I think you've got it backwards. There's a fairly good case being made for Jac0b as the God figure and MiB as the devil figure. There are theories that the MiB is named Esau. Jac0b requires faith, while MiB offers "easy answers," though we haven't quite gotten those yet. Lots of temptation, though.
Jac0b waterboarding Richard was a rather violent interpretation of baptism, as well.
The diabolical thing about MiB is that he wants to seem like everyone's friend, the good guy… When Richard saw his wife on the ship, it's pretty safe to say that it was the smoke monster taking her form in order to tempt him.

Hm, I just listened to the LOST podcast and they hinted that my theory could be correct in that Flocke is actually on the good side/being honest.

Christina, I agree the popular theory is MiB is the devil figure. I wouldn't put it pass the LOST folks to turn everything on its head though.

I like that you've "got it backwards," as the previous poster said. I too don't think it's as black & white/cut & dry as they're leading us to believe.
But I also don't think it's as explicitly Christian/biblical as you might think, considering all the other religious/cultural ideas floating around the island. BUT, honestly this makes as good a sense to me as any other theory right now. I am generally alone in my distrust of Jac0b & my thinking there's more to Smokey/MiB than there seems to be. I hope we're right!
(P.S. Can I link to this on the fan page? Or do you want to?)

This is great! I actually LIKE that "you've got it backwards"!! Like u said, it would be just like the producers to lead us to believe that Jac0b is God, MIB is Devil, but then throw us for a loop!!! Great stuff!

I think this (all of this–us question who's good, who's bad, whether they could be reversed) is exactly where the writers want us.
I think they want all of us believing that Jac0b=good so that if/when they reveal MIB=good there will be shock heard round the world (at least on twitter!)

Definitely agree on that. Lost is always where they've wanted us! I actually am loving it. Even if the answer were out there, I wouldn't want to read it. I like the anticipation especially now that we are only weeks away from knowing.

Well, I agree that the writers are always pulling the rug out from under us. And they could be doing it in this situation too. They reference a ton of Christian ideas, but it never goes as deep as what you have done in your post. (Kudos for that by the way! You did a lot of work there!) They hit the main ideas, but it's not strictly fleshed out all the way down the line as Christian. Just like they take snippets from Alice in Wonderland and reference them, i.e.
Since you've opened up the Biblical route (thank you 🙂 ) can I reiterate what I mentioned on another blog? This episode was a confirmation for me that the MIB is indeed evil. Until last night I was still vacillating over the issue(obviously what the writers want, those sly dogs!) I guess it came down to the fact that evil often tries to impersonate good in order to manipulate.
And that is what the MIB always seems to be doing. Manipulating. Making promises he cannot and has no intention of keeping, appearing as one who has been wronged and being all self-righteous about it, and deflecting inquiries as to why he kills so many people.
Once he deems them as someone who is useless, cannot be manipulated or eventually turned to his side, then he kills them.
It just hit me that Jac0b allowed himself to be killed. I don't remember him looking surprised when it happened. He saw Ben with the knife, right? He even provoked him by saying "What about you?" I wonder if Jac0b thought he'd be more powerful once he was dead? And he can prove his point that man is not inherently corrupt, by dying and having a human take his place in protecting the Island. Hmmmm . . .
Of course, we who believe in the Bible know that we ARE in fact inherently corrupt, but the world doesn't like that idea, so they keep pushing the opposite as labeling it as "inspirational" so as to not get flack for being too religious.
I also don't like that Jac0b, if he is in fact a Christ-like character, is being played as weak and almost timid, "Oh, I can't get all involved" excuses. Ick. But that's just cause it doesn't jive with my view of God who is intimately involved with each of us.

Based on the most recent episode, I'd say you're right one. I totally get what you're saying and I think that the little nuances of what MiB did during the episode really supported your theory. So far, I think it's the most valid one I've heard os far!

I dont think that MIB is Satan/evil. I think it's more of a case of Jac0b and MIB both being some sort of 'fallen angels' or similar entities. If you get biblical, you'll remember that those archangels weren't sweethearts, and they spread some serious wrath. Would make sense as Jac0b isn't perfect or the complete embodiment of good, even though he has hope for mankind.

Ahh – Lost is so confusing. I do like your theory though. Traditionally, the name "Jac0b" was associated with lies as in the Bible Jac0b was a huge liar and that's why God changed his name to Israel after their little wrestle.
Also – does anyone else notice that the Lost promo picture (pictured at the top of this post) looks very similar to Da Vinci's The Last Supper. It has Fake Locke/MiB/Smokey in the Jesus position.
Stuff to think about though of course, any allegory is going to fall short of the true story, but it does make me think!

Amy this theory is amazing! I just got goosebumps reading it. From the beginning I have found many biblical references in LOST. When he said "I AM" my mind went in the same direction that yours did. The whole time I have been thinking that Jac0b was good and the Smoke monster was bad, but I never thought about the fact that Satan is deemed the ultimate schemer.
Revelations 13: 13-25 "It works great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of men; and by the signs which it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast, it deceives those who dwell on earth, bidding them make an image for the beast which was wounded by the sword and yet lived; and it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast so that the image of the beast should even speak…"
Jac0b is deceptive just like Satan. He looks appealing, appears to be on the side of "good" and is great at manipulating others into believing his way is better, easier.
Jac0b could easily be "satan" or evil.
I really like this theory. Thanks for posting. Have a blessed week!
