So I took back 4 of the 6 pairs of boots I bought on Black Friday. Five of them were wrapped and waiting for Christmas as of this morning.
I’m posting this explanation with both hesitation and humility. I don’t want my family and friends I’m buying Christmas for to hear this and feel like I’m begrudging gift-giving or we don’t have the money for it. I’ve had a blast picking out gifts this year. Also, as always, I also don’t want you to think I want a pat on the back for this. I just need to get an explanation out there to the people that are physically around me why I’m not wearing fifty eleven different pairs of boots all winter. And since I made a big deal about getting the things, I kind of have to make a big deal about getting rid of them. Such is the blogging life. Also, I know I had fifty eleven options on how to get rid of these (Sisterhood of the Traveling Boots, anyone?) but in this case, I felt like the right thing was just to return them. So if you’d like to hear me ramble a bit more about all this, here is 2 minutes and 51 seconds more!

Good for you for listening to that still small voice. Obedience is sometimes difficult but the “weight off the shoulders” is an even better feeling. Love the analogy you used about trimming the fat off the steak, too…
Yay for you, Amy! I know you are not asking for a pat on the back, but I’m giving it to you!

You are so wise! David and I completely stopped using credit a couple of years ago when I cut them up in the carpool line after God really convicted me about it and even though we were never really in debt it is so freeing to not have to think about it. Now we only do stockings for each other (most of which I’ve purchased with coupon stuff and let him shop in my closet:) – way better than the nonsense he would purchase at Walmart). I am glad, though, that you are keeping one pair though because I mean, really, you’re too cute to not have cute boots too.

Thanks 🙂 I think I will appreciate the 2 pairs that I kept even more.
We have always paid off our credit cards monthly and we have the money in our savings to handle paying Christmas off. We use the credit cards for rewards. So I guess it wasn’t really the credit card per se, as much as digging even more into savings that wasn’t allocated to Christmas. Either way, it was money I felt like I shouldn’t have spent on them!

Amy, I think it’s really great that you shared this. I think it will give others courage to do what is right for them!

Oh girl, I did the same thing!! I stood in line for an HOUR at Express on Black Friday to buy myself some clothes. While I could have desperately used them, they were not in my budget. So about a week later, they went back to the store and i used that money to buy the christmas gifts that WERE in my christmas budget. Now I’m just hoping that i’ll get some money for christmas where i can go back and get what I took back…and maybe take advantage of after-christmas sales 🙂

Good for you! I haven’t used a credit card in over two years, and amazingly it feels good not to worry about those bills coming in every month. That said, I did splurge on an outfit for myself a couple months ago (sweater, boots, and all) and felt insanely guilty about it after I bought it. My husband had to convince me that it was okay to keep everything!

God will probably reward you with something really great. It’s not that he doesn’t want us to have things, but he wants our obedience. i’d say that you came through big time with that. good for you. and good for you for sharing.

I’m reading from oldest to new, so just saw this post! I TOTALLY understand your buyer’s remorse on buying all those boots. I continue to have buyer’s remorse over the 20+ pairs I own that could have paid the rent or maybe a bit more. Live and learn.
