I’m not a new year resolver. But there is an ongoing list of skills that I wish I could learn to do. Some skills need to come naturally and they just don’t. Others I don’t have time to tackle and still others I have absolutely no reason not to tackle but I just haven’t yet. And here they are:
- Sell something on etsy. Anything. It’s a few-years-long dream of mine. I wish I was super crafty and my days were spent crafting something up while customers anxiously awaited new items. If there was an item on this list I’m considering, this is it. I just have to come up with that brilliant idea of a craft I can actually do. Ideas accepted in the comments.
- On that note, I wish I could sew. It’s really sad I don’t know how to as my mother does it for a living. Plus, she sent me to sewing classes. I did learn how to sew a straight line. Or, wait, I think there was a curve in one of those lessons. But I don’t own a machine and don’t have the time to sit and practice or learn to sew from a pattern.
- Can food. This is ridiculous as I’m sure I CAN can. I remember my great-grandmother canning all kinds of jellies and veggies and storing them in her cellar. But every time I look at instructions there are jars and special tong thingies (did you just read that as “thongs”. because I just did during a read-through). and rules about temperatures and it’s just overwhelming.
- Write a song. But not just a song, a great song. I’m always in awe when someone can write a smart song, particularly with a play on words. I just haven’t thought of anything smart yet.
- Write a novel. I actually tried that once and am pretty sure it’s not meant for me. But I wish it were.
- Own chickens. Seriously I think those little houses are so cute and the idea of having fresh eggs is pretty amazing. But the mess. And the smell. And the inability to turn the chickens “off” turns ME off.
- Run. I completed the Couch to 5K and really WANTED to like running but I don’t. But hey, I HAVE done the 30 Day Shred for 10 days.
- Quit work. I wish I were a Stay at Home Mom and had time to learn and do all these things. No surprises there. However, being in debt is NOT on this list.
- Floss every day. Please don’t tell me you do this or I’ll have to kick you in the shin.
- Love to pretend play. I love to spend time with my kids. I really do. I can bake, color and play Monopoly with the best of them. But I don’t, and haven’t since I was 8, liked playing with Barbies, babies, American Girl dolls, etc. With the exception of running the toy cash register, I have to force myself in the playroom.
OK, so that felt a little whiny. Sorry for the whine. If you do any of these well, I would love to hear it! And list a few tips on how I might actually add one of these to a real task list!

Let’s see if you do the canning of food, raising of chickens, sewing….maybe add grow a garden done then quitting your job should be easy to do then. If your like us a majority of our monthly bills are food. Extra credit would be an aquaponic garden and don’t forget a few milk cows.
Amy says
Very good point. But I’m SO bad at gardening that I can’t even put that on a wish list. And I’m going to look up what an aquaponic garden even is!

I would absolutely buy one of the pine cone wreaths you made. I’m sure other craft-challenged people would as well. I don’t know if Etsy has this type of thing but you could offer children’s party planning advice. Your summer luau was so much fun!

I totally forgot I made that! Shipping is the other hurdle on things like that!

I can relate to so many of those items:
#1 – Dying to think of something I could sell! I’m fairly crafty, but just can’t quite nail down something I’d like to make.
#7 – Ok, it’s not really a goal of mine to like running because I know I just don’t! In fact, I don’t like working out at all. THAT should be my goal…to like working out 🙂
#9 – I’m one of those that only floss about a week or so before I go to the dentist. For some reason I think I can fool the dentist that way? Nope, he always says I could floss a bit more. Go figure.
Fun list! Happy New Year, Amy!

Staci, you nailed it. For many of these it’s not that I want to do it as much as I wish I wanted to do it!

Re: flossing. As my brother anxiously awaits to hear from his dental school applications I have been forced to floss. I think I’ve flossed more in the past month than I have in my entire life. The game changer for me was buying the little floss picks that you throw away rather than attempting to have finesse with the string that gets that nasty powder all over your mouth.
Writing a novel shouldn’t be on your list, since you just wrote a memoir that PEOPLE BOUGHT. 🙂
Amy says
You know someone else just recommended those flossing things too. I’m such a cheapo. I get floss free so I hate to pay for something else.
And yes, good point about the book. But writing non-fiction is one thing I would list on Things I like and I’m pretty good at 🙂 Fiction is a whole other beast!

I totally related to so many of these wishes. I would love to learn to sew. I just took a class and I realized that we spent most of the time learning to thread the darn machine. Can’t they just make a self threading machine?
I am terrible with flossing too. I usually am all gung ho about it right after my dentist appt but then fall off the wagon about a week or two later. Oh and I’m also too cheap/green for those throw away flossers.
I’d love to write a novel too!
Amy says
Girl, yes! I think the flossing thing was on my mind because I just went two weeks ago (no cavities!) and took the kids for FOUR fillings last month as well. Ugh! Gotta do better!
PS, miss your blog so much! Would love to hear an update, even if it’s just through email!

You are so sweet, Amy. I miss blogging and have tossed around the idea of starting a new one. I just don’t know if I have enough to say at the moment. I just loved writing and I really miss it, as well as the fun relationships with other bloggers. I have continued to read yours (even if I don’t take the time to comment–sorry!) and always enjoy your updates. 🙂
