Highlights from the weekend:
- Both girls spent the night with Scott’s parents’ Friday night and we got to sleep in on Saturday. Scott’s back has been hurting him lately so he didn’t do his normal mountain biking first thing Saturday. I hate his back has been hurting but I loved sleeping in.
- I got to do a bit of shopping on my own Saturday morning. I got a belt at Kohl’s for $5. I wish you could have seen my old belt. I bought that old belt from NY & Company in the mid-90s. Ridiculous! I also stopped at Hobby Lobby where I got completely overwhelmed. So many ideas and so little money. I walked away with absolutely nothing. That’s the kind of place I need a friend to filter through all the decisions with me.
- Saturday afternoon we went to the Melting Pot with our friends Jake and Jill. The girls had a real! live! babysitter! We usually have family watch them but they were psyched to have a “real” babysitter at the house. The Melting Pot didn’t disappoint. If nothing else, you should go and have the dessert and be sure to get The Original – a mix of chocolate and peanut butter. Yum!
- After church yesterday we went to the Mummies of the World exhibit in Charlotte. I’m not certain I have formed a solid opinion of the mummies. In some ways, it was like a bad wreck you couldn’t look away from. At times, I wondered why in the world I just paid to walk around and look at dead people. Other times, it was very cool to see the hieroglyphics on some of the mummies or see how much different people were years ago. Very fascinating. But yes, if you think about it too much it’s very weird. The kids loved it though and were fascinated by how the people died and how old they were. But at the end of the day, they still preferred all the amazing activities that Discovery Place has to offer. At this age, they can’t seem to soak in enough facts about science.

The rest of the weekend was filled in with laundry and TV (Downton Abbey! Big Bang Theory! Blue Bloods!) and shopping. A great weekend for sure.
I’m curious, do the mummies gross you out or fascinate you?
Becky says
Mummies do both…gross me out and fascinate me to no end. It sounds like you had a fun filled weekend!
I didn’t realize you are watching the Big Bang Theory now! I love that show!
Amy says
Well, we watched one random episode at my parents’ a few weeks ago and then I set my DVR to record all the episodes. I have no idea what season we are watching but I know they are older repeats but they are HILARIOUS. Scott loves watching it too so we finally have another TV show we both like watching. Although, shh, don’t say anything but he seems pretty fascinated when we watch Downton 🙂
Becky says
I’ve been watching the re-runs as well for Big Bang Theory! I like that Scott is fascinated by Downton! I love that show!

Oh I love The Melting Pot, haven’t been since after Valentine’s Day last year though. You can never go wrong with melted cheese & chocolate! I’m with you on the mummy issue. I sort of feel the same way about viewing those exhibits like I do about our custom of viewings before a funeral. No offense intended to anyone, but it’s always seemed bizarre & maudlin to me, staring at an open-casket dead body. And am I the only one still a little weepy this morning over last night’s Downton? 🙁
Amy says
Ally, I was just telling Becky over email that I teared up over Matthew saying “Mother” when she arrived. Oh, and his mother’s conversation with Mary where she says “It’s nothing” and his mom says, “It’s the very opposite of nothing.” Ack!
Ally Garner says
So true-best lines of the episode. But I’m more weepy of William. I just hate that he’s gone. I’ve got the season 2 dvds from my cousin who lives in London. She originally got me into Downton before season 1 premiered. It’s sooo tempting not to bust open those dvds and watch the rest of the season!
Amy says
I couldn’t find much compassion with William. I’m not sure why I never connected with him much. One of the few characters that I didn’t.
Ally Garner says
Aww, I loved William. I fell in love with him last season when he socked Thomas. Breaking: Shirley MacLaine joins the cast of Downton starting season 3 http://is.gd/fYnTDf. Maybe she’ll reincarnate Weezer 😉

don’t spoil it *closing eyes*

I was able to volunteer during Leila’s class trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario for the King Tut exhibit. The mummies and their belongings were interesting but some of the kids were freaked out by them. The Science Centre trip for The Living Bodies Exhibit (sometimes called The Amazing Bodies) was upsetting to a lot of the kids and parents. At least with Mummies they look dead but the Living Bodies…don’t.
Amy says
I couldn’t make myself go to the living bodies one…freaky!
Carolyn says
Honestly, as bad as the Living Bodies exhibit was, the worst field trip I went on was when my kids were each in 4th Grade. They did a unit on Medieval Times and part of the exhibit was torture devices. Several of the parent volunteers (myself included) took our groups out of the exhibit and let the teacher know that we felt it was completely inappropriate for 9 and 10 year-olds. Matthew’s teacher did not have us go to that part of the museum so I had no idea about when it was Leila’s turn or I would have refused from the start. I’d go to The Living Bodies exhibit 100 times before I’d go back to that one!
Amy says
Ew, I wouldn’t even want to see that as adult, much less let my kids see it!
